We often here the excuse, “the devil made me do it”, when addressing why someone has behaved in whatever way he or she has. However, when it comes to the realm of mental illness, one can too quickly blame the devil instead of seeking professional help; or, vice versa, premature diagnosis of a psychosis that would be better treated with spiritual means. How does one discern the difference? Fr. Cristino, in his address to the Catholic Psychotherapy Conference, suggests a few indications of where to begin.
